an ark of love

the outbreak of sars cau sed a gr ea t panic all over the world . people a t first felt bewildered , and then wor ried , and finally utte rly helpless , because sars viru ses spread so rapidly and wer e so highly infectiou s that scientists had not yet time to detect the origin of the disease , let alone to produce a cure and ther apy for it . thousands of sars cases wer e report ed to have developed in a round 26 count ries and still more cases were under suspicion . pes simists thought that it was god’s punis hment to human beings and human beings could hardly look forward to a na r row escape .

in china , the situation was especially seriou s in april and may . eve ry day people listened with gr eat tension to the radio broadcast which r epor ted the increasing number of sars victims and probable cases , initially found in a few provinces and major cities and soon in mor e areas . just as people found themselves in a tr emendous epidemic turmoil , the cpc commit tee and the cent r al government timely is sued a series of rigorous measures with governments at all levels immediately responding to the call , such as setting aside mas sive funds , setting in operation tr acing , monitoring and r egistering mechanisms , pasteurizing public sur rounding environments , examining feve r symptoms , keeping vigilant watch on ha rd-hit a reas . however , of all the measures , the most dynamic and emergent was designating sars specific hospitals and assembling doctors and nurses .

armed with face mask s and wr apped in thick white gowns , the wa r riors in white wor ked around the clock , risking their own lives and leaving behind their families and children .

for months , they we re confined with the patients to the isolated island . quite a number of them got infected and many died . those who r ecover ed soon went back to their posts .

they said that in the name of nightingale, they would burn themselves to light others . t heir heroic deeds and selfles s devotion moved people to tear s and inspir ed them to br avely fight against the god of plague . people called them angels in white and the most beloved of the era who wer e building an ark of love , sailing fea rlessly on the rough sea to the harbour of safety .

now, with sars gr adually fading away , people have become more conscious of the import ance of health and civilization , and above all , love and unity . sars is always there , and people have no full idea what other evils the re are in pandora’s box . however , if people always love each other and always unite as one , ther e will be no evil that they cannot conquer .
